PROJECTS
Ongoing

  • TRANS-GRESSION – founder of an artists’ collective dedicated to creating opportunities for people to examine, play with, and break gender stereotypes while building a safe space for artistic and personal exploration. We provide support and access to resources for individual and group projects. (2006-present)
  • GENDER PORTRAITURE – a portraiture project for exploring concepts of female and feminine through costuming and photography. (2007-present)

2003 - 2006

  • FEMALE PORTRAITURE – a series of mixed media “portraits”, lithography and mixed media on paper mounted to panels combining digitally manipulated images taken from public places including, photographs by the artist of art displayed in museums, public statues, mannequins, images from the internet, and texts by women both past and present.
  • RETELLING HISTORY FROM THE MARGINS - a series of Xerox lithography monotypes. Digitally manipulated photographs of Philadelphian statues and monuments are combined with texts and quotes relating to cultural and gender diversity.
  • BUSTING OUT – an experimental documentary video, originally inspired by working in a women’s collective, includes breast interviews of Womyn from Michigan, about the phenomenon of breast implants and how the media impacts Americans view on women’s breasts and body image. (15 mins.)

1998-2001

  • STANDARDIZATION – an experimental video elicits an emotional experience created by layered texts, sounds, and images bringing the subject through a clash of place, gender, race, and religion. (6 mins.)
  • NATURE WALK – an experimental video juxtaposes city ‘nature’ scenes with the artist’s grandmother’s idyllic view of nature. (6 mins.)
  • KNOWING – an experimental video, juxtaposes a deteriorating cityscape with an outsider’s view of childhood survival. (5 mins.)

1994 – 1996

  • THE CONSUMER – a video animation & mixed media installation including interactive metal sculpture and photographs.
  • FIGHTING INERTIA – a video animation of a mixed media performance using interactive metal sculpture.
  • EMERGENCE - a collaborative dance performance of wearable and interactive metal sculpture, a high school student and her dance teacher.
  • CAST ASIDE – a collaborative mixed media installation of metal, fiber, and ceramic in an abandoned men’s public restroom.

  • ART WITHIN REACH: ART & COMMUNITY - Esther Klein Art Gallery/Art-Reach - A Photography workshop and exhibition with men in transitional housing in South Philadelphia. The resulting photos break down in two groups: People in the Streets and Urban Landscapes
  • MODERN ICONOGRAPHY: RE-PRESENTING OURSELVES IN THE 21ST CENTURY - William Way LGBT Community Center, digital photography & video for women interested in critical dialogue and art-making regarding modern female iconography in relation to identities such as queer, lesbian, bi, trans, feminine/masculine, androgyny, femme, butch, goddess, dyke, etc.
  • COMMUNITY ARTS PROGRAM - BuildaBridge International, photography and book making for families in transition as a means to explore family relationships and personal identity. (2005-2006)
  • ARAB-AMERICAN YOUTH LEADERSHIP - Albustan Seeds of Culture, a series of videos made with Palestinian-American youth and Arab-American adults including “Mendeel”, a documentary about a teenage girl who chooses to be recognized as Muslim by wearing the mendeel, head-scarf. (2005 - 2006)

1998 - 2004

  • DELAWARE COUNTY INTERMEDIATE UNIT (Jan. - May 2002 & Jan. - May 2003) Cyberpassages: Artist in residence for the production of videos created from stories the students wrote with Storyteller Beth Phillips-Brown at middle schools in Delaware county.
  • THE URBAN NUTRITION INITIATIVE - Sayre Beacon School, video production with 9th grade students from an urban public school, tells the story of having fun and eating healthy. (2004)
  • LANGUAGE ARTS TOMORROW - Radnor Middle School, video production a digital storytelling with 6th grade students and teachers. (2003)
  • VIDEO PRODUCTION AS ART - Radnor High School, two video production projects: an Advanced Placement Art class explores the aesthetics of contemporary video art; a Physical Education student and teacher produce a video promoting the benefits physical education. (2003)
  • MEDIA ARTS PROGRAM - West Philadelphia High School, Co-founder, grant writer and artist in residence of a media arts program designed to provide media literacy education, video production, animation, and web site design with a strong focus on community based projects for urban youth and teachers. (1998 – 2004)
  • BIZ ARTS – Walt Whitman Cultural Arts Center, Camden, NJ, videography and animation teacher for an after school media arts program designed to provide professional development and community organizing with youth. (1998-2001)
